New Mexico Coues & Whitetail Rut Dates

By Dustin Kiernan · Updated October 1, 2026

New Mexico's rut runs later the farther south and west you go. The state wildlife department puts the peak in the last week of November in the north, the first week of December in the central and southeast, and from the end of December into early January in the southwest, where Coues whitetail can breed from November to February, peaking in December and January.

Straight talk: most New Mexico deer hunting is mule deer. The state's whitetail are Coues deer in the southwestern mountains (a mid-winter rut), plus a few plains whitetail along the eastern edge, the windows below note which is which.

Where do the New Mexico rut dates come from?

In May 2025 the department's deer program manager wrote that the rut typically peaks in the last week of November in the north, comes in the first week of December in the central and southeast, and runs from the end of December into early January in the southwest. They sit in its mule deer section, with no method given. Its 1993 Wildlife Notes says Coues can breed November to February, peaking in December and January.

The windows above follow the department. The Coues card spans those two peak months, and with no separate date for eastern whitetail, the other cards use its northern and its central and southeastern dates.

How do the 2026 seasons in New Mexico line up with the rut?

Deer tags are drawn by unit, nearly all for fork-antlered deer, and the 2026 to 2027 dates are:

The Coues peak falls between the December rifle hunts and the January 16 to 31 whitetail archery hunts. The January 1 to 15 archery hunt runs through it, but is mule deer only in Units 23, 24 and 27. In the northeast, the November 25 to 29 either-sex hunts match the last week of November.

How many deer do New Mexico hunters take?

Hunters took an estimated 9,300 bucks and fewer than 150 does in the 2025 to 2026 season, and 30 percent of hunters afield filled a tag. Mule deer make up 95 percent of the harvest. Coues hunts are small: on public land, Unit 23's January whitetail archery hunt had about 36 hunters and 14 percent success.

Where is the public ground in New Mexico?

New Mexico has about 9 million acres of national forest and 13 million acres of BLM land, where you need a Habitat Stamp. A draw license is good on open public land in its unit, and in the Gila, public access is through Forest Service, BLM and state trust land.

State Trust Land is open to licensed hunters in season, with scouting allowed 14 days ahead. The Open Gate program leases private land for public hunting at no extra fee. Wildlife management areas are closed unless the booklet lists them open.

Turn the New Mexico dates into a plan

A date on a calendar can't tell you which spot to sit. RackIQ weighs the rut phase for your part of New Mexico against the wind, your way in, the pressure already on the ground and what you've seen there, then says hunt it or save it.
