California Deer Rut & Movement

By Dustin Kiernan · Updated October 1, 2026

California's rut runs from the coast to the desert. The Department of Fish and Game puts it in October in the coastal mountains. CDFW says Sierra mule deer breed on winter range from mid-November, and its zone D-7 collar study logged rut movements from about November 25 to January 1. Desert burro deer in zone D-12 breed from January into March, mostly in February.

Straight talk: CDFW says there are no free-roaming whitetail in California, so the windows below cover the blacktail and mule deer you'll actually hunt. RackIQ reads daily movement from weather, terrain and pressure anywhere; its rut model is whitetail-tuned, so treat these as blacktail/mule deer timing.

Blacktail & mule deer rut by region

Coastal mountains (blacktail and coastal mule deer)

Oct 1 to 31

Peak: October, the department's stated month

The department says coastal deer rut earlier than most deer in the state. A stated month, not a measured window.

Sierra Nevada mule deer, on winter range

Nov 15 to Jan 1

Peak: not published; breeding starts in mid-November

CDFW's eastern Sierra zone sheets put breeding from mid-November on winter range; its zone D-7 collar study on the west slope saw rut movements from about November 25 to January 1.

Colorado Desert burro deer (zone D-12)

Jan 1 to Mar 10

Peak: February

The 1984 Burro Deer Herd Management Plan found breeding from January into March, most pairs seen in February. The March 10 end is our reading of 'into March'.

Regional estimates, and your area can vary. Where these dates come from is below.

Where do the California rut dates come from?

The Department of Fish and Game's 2002 deer hunting guide puts California's rut from October in the coastal mountains to January in the southern deserts. CDFW's 2026 eastern Sierra zone sheets say mule deer breed on winter range starting in mid-November, and its collar study of the upper San Joaquin herd in zone D-7, from 2013 to 2016, logged rut movements from about November 25 to January 1. The 1984 Burro Deer Herd Management Plan found desert deer in zone D-12 breeding from January into March, with most pairs seen in February.

The cards above follow those dates. The coastal card is the guide's stated month, not a measured window, and only burro deer have a peak on record. We found no agency breeding dates for the southern mountains or the northeast.

How do the 2026 seasons in California line up with the rut?

Seasons are set by zone. The 2026 dates:

Most general seasons close before the rut. Zone A ends September 20, ahead of the October coastal rut, though most B zones run to October 25. Eastern Sierra zones and D-7 close by early November, before breeding there. Late draw hunts reach the Sierra rut, and CDFW set the D-7 one closer to peak breeding to sample bucks for CWD.

How many deer do California hunters take?

Hunters reported just over 24,000 deer in 2025, nearly all bucks. With almost 42 percent of tags never reported, CDFW estimates the real take at about 40,800 deer, with 24.5 percent hunter success. Of reported bucks with a point count, 45 percent were 2-points and about a fifth were 4-points or bigger.

Where is the public ground in California?

The Forest Service manages 20 million acres of national forest in California and the BLM 15 million acres, about 15 percent of the state. CDFW adds over 1.1 million acres on more than 700 properties, with many chances to hunt.

In parts of zone A such as Marin, Sonoma and Santa Clara counties, public access is limited and most deer are taken on private land. CDFW's SHARE program gives landowners incentives to open ground to public hunters by permit.
