Pennsylvania Whitetail Rut Dates & Deer Movement

By Dustin Kiernan · Updated October 1, 2026

Pennsylvania runs a steady mid-November rut. From 2000 to 2007 the Game Commission dated conception in more than 6,000 road-killed does, and the statewide median fell between November 11 and 17 every year, with 9 in 10 does bred between mid-October and mid-December.

Where do the Pennsylvania rut dates come from?

From 2000 to 2007, when the study ended, the Game Commission examined more than 6,000 road-killed does and dated each conception from the length of the fetus. The statewide median conception date fell between November 11 and 17 every year, and about 9 in 10 does were bred October 16 to December 16. Doe fawns breed about two weeks later, peaking in late November and early December.

Every window above covers that November 11 to 17 span, with the central card's November 14 peak in the middle. The Game Commission's figures are statewide, so the north to south stagger is our estimate. Its numbers barely moved from year to year and did not follow the so-called rutting moon.

How do the 2026 seasons in Pennsylvania line up with the rut?

The main 2026 to 2027 deer seasons, all of which include Sundays:

Of these, only archery is open through the mid-November peak, and in WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D it runs to November 27. The rifle season opens November 28, after the adult doe peak but during the doe fawns' late November and early December peak.

How many deer do Pennsylvania hunters take?

Pennsylvania hunters took about 506,000 deer in the 2025 to 2026 seasons, up about 6 percent, and just over 185,000 were antlered. About 29 percent of hunters got a buck, the best rate since at least 2007, and two of every three bucks were at least 2.5 years old. Bowhunters took about 94,000 bucks, a few thousand more than the regular firearms season.

Where is the public ground in Pennsylvania?

The Game Commission owns more than 1.5 million acres of state game lands, and state forests add more than 2.2 million. On game lands a stand or blind can go up no earlier than two weeks before the first deer season, must come down within two weeks after the last, and needs a tag with your name and address or CID number.

The Hunter Access Program opens private land to public hunting. This season each property is Open Access (no permission needed), Reservation Access (book online) or Permission Access (ask the landowner).
